What an extraordinary Bank Holiday Monday! This past May 4th, members of Huguenot Lodge traded the lodge room for the ancient stone corridors of the Tower of London for an unforgettable private VIP night tour.
Stepping Into History
Our evening began as the crowds dispersed, leaving the fortress in a rare state of quiet majesty. We were privileged to be guided by a Yeoman Warder, whose storytelling brought nearly a thousand years of history to life.
The Tower of London Founded by William the Conqueror in 1066, the Tower has served as a royal palace, a fortress, and a notorious prison. It remains one of the world’s most iconic structures, standing as a physical timeline of British history.
The Yeoman Warders Often known as “Beefeaters,” the Yeoman Warders have been the ceremonial guardians of the Tower since 1485. Originally formed by Henry VII as his personal bodyguard, today’s Warders are all retired warrant officers from the British Armed Forces with at least 22 years of exemplary service. They aren’t just guides; they are the living breath of the Tower’s traditions.
The Ceremony of the Keys
The highlight of our night was witnessing the Ceremony of the Keys. This is the ancient ritual of locking the Tower of London, which has taken place every single night—without fail—for over 700 years.
As the Chief Warder moved through the darkness with a lantern and the Queen’s (now King’s) Keys, the echoes of the sentry’s challenge rang out:
“Halt! Who comes there?” > “The Keys.” > “Whose Keys?” > “King Charles’s Keys.”
Standing in the shadows of the Bloody Tower to witness this exchange was a powerful reminder of the importance of ritual and duty—values we hold dear at Huguenot Lodge.
The Most Exclusive Pub in the World: The Keys
To toast the end of a spectacular evening, we were invited into The Keys, a private club located within the Tower walls.
Known as the most exclusive pub in the world, The Keys is strictly off-limits to the general public. It serves as the private social club for the Yeoman Warders and their guests. The walls are lined with history, including signed photos from visiting royalty and world leaders, and even the “Yeoman’s Ledger.” Ending our night here, sharing a drink in a place so steeped in tradition, was the perfect conclusion to our social.

Fellowship Beyond the Lodge
At Huguenot Lodge, we believe that the strength of our bond is forged both inside and outside our meetings. Social events like this VIP tour are a cornerstone of our community, allowing us to share unique experiences and deepen our friendships.
We are currently planning many more social excursions for the coming year. Whether you are a member or interested in joining our ranks, there has never been a better time to be part of the Huguenot journey.
Stay tuned for our next adventure!
